Key Stage 3
At KS3, we ensure that the students explore a variety of drama techniques, acting styles and genres. This is explored through practical lessons in devised drama, scripted plays, the study of drama practitioners alongside written log books and evaluation of professional live theatre.
In Years 7 and 8 students have a one hour lesson every two weeks.
Students study units on storytelling techniques, introduction to drama devices and theatrical skills in voice and physicality; Commedia dell’arte focuses on characterisation, mime skills, action, plot and content. Script work is introduced in Year 7 .
A theatre trip is offered to Year 7 students appropriate to the units of work.
Students study Shakespeare focusing on developing characterisation, vocal skills and working with text. Greek Theatre, develops physical theatre, ensemble and devising skills. Exploration of choral speech and movement, theatre staging and spaces are embedded into the unit of work.
A theatre trip is offered to Year 8 students appropriate to the units of work.
Students develop a deeper understanding of drama techniques, genres and practitioners preparing them thoroughly for Key Stage 4. Topics include, devising techniques linked to Brecht, Physical theatre and the work of Frantic Assembly working with scripts from page to stage through a wide range variety of styles and genres. Areas of study include theatre roles and terminology and evaluating live theatre performance. Students will develop analytical skills in acting, technical and design aspects through a set play leading to a scripted performance. Written work forms an integral part of the course in preparation for GCSE.

Why study Drama?
GCSE Drama is not just about acting. The course covers a range of transferable skills that will be useful throughout life: communication, presentation/public speaking, group and leadership skills, problem solving, time management, initiative and the ability to work to a deadline and get it right first time. Drama is also a subject to take if you want a job in the entertainment industry, in front of an audience or behind the scenes. It is also relevant and interesting to people who are interested in culture or social issues. Drama builds confidence, teaches team work and social skills and enhances and refines performance skills and artistic expression. GCSE Drama explicitly teaches widely transferable, attractive skills such as: collaboration, experimentation, creativity, creative and essay writing. GCSE Drama prepares you for to progression to A levels, University across a range of subjects and career pathways and directly into the workplace.
The course consists of three components:
Component 1 Understanding Drama
Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre, study of the set play ‘Blood Brothers’, through practical and written exploration. Live Theatre performance is a core element and students will need to see a wide range of professional performance work at local theatres which they analyse and evaluate through written work . Job roles, acting, design and technical are taught in this unit.
Component 2 – Devising Drama
Students explore a range of devising techniques, drama practitioners, styles and genres leading to a devised performances together with written analysis and evaluation of the students own work through a drama log leading to a final 2500 word essay.
Component 3 Texts in Practice
Performance of two extracts from one play. Students will study a range of scripted plays developing characterisation
COMPONENT 1 : written exam: 1 hour and 45 minutes 40% of GCSE.
COMPONENT 2 Devising log (60 marks): Devised performance (20 marks) 40% of GCSE.
COMPONENT 3 : Performance to a visiting examiner:
Performance of Extract 1 (20 marks) and Extract 2 (20 marks) 20% of GCSE.
