At Paignton Academy, our Art & Design curriculum provides an exciting and supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to explore ideas, experiment and produce imaginative work. By recording experiences and developing independence, they grow in confidence as artists and creative thinkers.

By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils will have embarked on a rich artistic journey, exploring the key principles of Art & Design. Pupils will develop the confidence to take creative risks, experiment with diverse ideas, and work with a wide range of 2D and 3D materials, techniques, and processes. Our carefully sequenced curriculum delivers essential knowledge and skills, while introducing pupils to artists, designers, and craftspeople from a variety of cultures, genders, and beliefs fostering cultural awareness, respect, and meaningful connections with the wider world.
Pupils also learn to analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others, building transferable skills such as resilience, problem-solving, and refinement. These lay a strong foundation for progression to Key Stage 4 and beyond, encouraging pupils to aim high and strive for excellence.
The KS3 ‘Learning Journey’ is structured around nine threshold concepts in Art & Design pedagogy, delivered through an ambitious, knowledge-rich, and practical curriculum. Pupils learn best by doing, building on prior knowledge, mastering the formal elements, and engaging actively in creative processes to become increasingly independent.
