Year 8 Football Take Home Silver
A team of Year 8 students from Paignton Academy claimed the silver medals at a football tournament in Newton Abbot.
One of two teams from the Academy who were entered into the six-a-side competition at the Devon FA’s Coach Road headquarters, Paignton Academy ‘A’ stormed their way to top spot in their group, earning them the right to face Magdalen Court School – who finished first in the other group – in a play-off for overall winner in the Year 8/9 section.
The students were disappointed to lose 2-0 to the school from Exeter but were able to take consolation from being presented with silver medals as competition runners-up.
A real highlight of the group phase was a sensational hat-trick for Oscar in a 3-1 victory over Barley Lane. Oscar’s second and third goals were classy finishes – one was a left-foot volley into the top corner and the other was smashed in off the crossbar.
Finn notched the other three goals for Paignton Academy ‘A’ – in 2-0 and 1-0 triumphs over Orchard Manor School ‘Yellow’ and Teign School ‘B’ respectively. The remaining group match ended goalless against ACE Tiverton.
Paignton Academy ‘B’ narrowly missed out on a play-off match – it was the top four of each group who qualified, with 1st versus 1st, 2nd versus 2nd and so on – but all the students enjoyed the experience. Highlights for that team included a last-ditch winner from Tobie in a 1-0 defeat of Southbrook.
Tom scored their other goal in the group phase, in a 1-1 draw with Teign School ‘A’.
Well done!
