Year 11 Football Team Outclass Exmouth
On 14th January the Year 11 football team celebrated the new year with a commanding win against Exmouth Community College in the first round of the Devon Cup.
The start of 2020 saw a couple of changes in the Paignton ranks, with Danny Tompkin making his first appearance for the school in goal, and Jack Alexander making his competitive debut off the bench in attack. The rest of the team was almost like for like the team that convincingly beat Churston Ferrers Grammar School just before the Christmas break, and this consistency in team selection allowed for a strong start to the decade for the PA boys.
The blues started the game in relentless fashion and took an early lead with a fantastic left-footed strike from the edge of the area by midfield anchorman Sam O’Mara. The rest of the first half continued in a similar vein, with the home team creating chance after chance as the visitors began to toil under the PA pressure. Oliver Groves lifted an effort just over the bar, while Charlie Rowe and Callum Nightingale both drilled good chances just wide of the Exmouth goal, as the boys in blue began to take complete control of the first half. The home team’s efforts warranted a second goal, and they were duly rewarded when captain, Jack Winsor, completed a well-worked move through midfield, with another fabulous drive from the edge of the area to extend the home team advantage.
A dominant start to the second half ensured that PA continued to gain a stranglehold of the contest, and the crucial third goal of the game soon followed. An incredible run from top goal scorer, Nightingale, saw the away team’s defence get cut wide open, and the lively striker completed a superb solo effort with a deft chip over the Exmouth keeper to make the score 3-0.
The away team’s first goal of the match may have come out of the blue, but it seemed to reinvigorate the Exmouth team who began to use their growing confidence to put pressure on the PA goal after reducing the deficit. The scoreline however remained the same, largely as a result of some resolute defending from Jack Mogg, Chris Mahon and Cameron Lane who were ably supported by debutante goalkeeper, Tompkin, who made an excellent double save under pressure from Exmouth to keep the Paignton lead intact. Nightingale was on hand to score a further goal, followed later by Winsor who brought the final score to an incredible 5-1.
The team are now in to the second round of the County Cup. Well done to all the boys involved.
