Year 10 Marine Academy Apprenticeship Day
On 11th and 18th May 2018 our Year 10 Engineers visited South Devon College Marine Academy.
Based on the River Dart at the Noss Marina, Kingswear, the Marine Academy is a maritime centre of excellence for training and education.
Our Year 10 students clearly enjoyed the visits, and have been able to use and record the experience as part of their Unit 1 “Introduction to Engineering” Portfolios. They learned about the history of ship building at Kingswear, including that of WW2 Liberty Ships.
They have also been able to include in their portfolios details of engineering training, engine servicing techniques and welding processes offered at the academy. The hands on experiences the students had were excellent, and very well planned.
The students enjoyed a trip along the River Dart to Dartmouth Castle and were given the opportunity to discuss examples of marine engineering along the way; from naval architecture and sacrificial anodes to the operation of the Kingswear Ferry Service. The students now have a heightened awareness of the options available to them post-16. We are looking forward to taking our new cohort of Year 10 Engineers for a visit next year.
We would like to say a big thank you to all of the staff at the Marine Academy.
